Tips for Long Drives – Here are a few tips you can follow to aid in arriving at your destination safely and comfortably.
When venturing out on a long journey it’s always best to plan ahead of time. And we aren’t just talking about packing. Driving long distances can take it’s toll on even the most experienced driver. Especially for those who haven’t prepared for the endurance demands of an extended haul. A lot of drivers will experience fatigue behind the wheel, this is absolutely normal, however, there are a few things you can do to stay safe and alert throughout your trip.
These tips for long trips will help you down the road.

Sleep Time
Think about exhaustion before you begin your journey, not after. Be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep for at minimum two consecutive nights. Avoid driving between 1 and 3pm, this is when your body’s temperature is lower and your body will naturally feel drowsy.
Fuel Up
This means fuel for you, not your car. Keeping your car fueled is important, but make sure your body is fueled as well. Take a variety of vitamin-packed healthy foods. Healthy foods will allow you to get by on smaller snacks throughout the long drive.
Stay hydrated
Be sure to keep a well-stocked water supply for maximum energy. Most people will avoid this due to the frequent bathroom stops. But in actuality keeping hydrated will allow for your body to perform at it’s best.
Plan your stops
Make sure you plan some pit stops to stretch your legs and get the blood flowing every two hours or so. Planning them around your mealtimes is probably the best. There might even be places of interest along your travels which you can stop and take in the scenes around you.
Chew gum
Chewing gum is a great way to increase circulation and alertness.
Sit up straight
For maximum blood flow adjust your seat and sit up properly. If you feel a “drive trance” coming up, sit up straight. If you can’t seem to shake the “drive trance” pull over and have a power nap.
Keep passengers entertained
Long drives can be quite a task, especially with kids in the car. Sibling bickering and arguing will lead to driver fatigue so make sure your children are thoroughly entertained with books, puzzles, and other diversions. Find and seek games are great for keeping everyone engaged and alert.
Treat yourself to some sounds
Audio books are a great activity for the brain. Keeping it active without creating a dangerous distraction.
Try these tips on your next long journey! Remember nothing beats a good nights rest to energize yourself during long trips, so if you have reached a certain point in your destination where your body is screaming for you to sleep – GET SOME SLEEP!
