Trailer Towing Familiarisation Course – Half Day

This course assists drivers with the knowledge and skills required to safely tow a trailer, while also helping them think in ways that promote cautious, low-risk driving behavior. 

It is designed for drivers who may be called upon to tow small or medium sized trailers (Including tandem trailers), as part of their employment.

This program is typically delivered at the workplace due to its 3.5-hour duration where two courses can be delivered in one day.

Participants supply their own passenger vehicle and Trailer.

Objectives

This course combines both classroom and practical learning, enabling drivers to understand what actions to take before and during trailer towing, and how to think in ways that promote cautious behaviour.

The following skills are demonstrated:

  • Pre-Towing Preparation: Participants learn the essential steps to take before towing a trailer, ensuring both the trailer and the vehicle are a safe and legal combination. 
  • Rig Preparation: Understanding how to prepare the entire setup, commonly referred to as the 'rig', for a journey, including checking tires, brakes, lights, and ensuring proper load distribution.
  • Hitching and Unhitching: Demonstrating the correct procedures for hitching and unhitching a trailer safely and efficiently. 
  • Load Securing and Weight Distribution: Learning techniques to properly secure a load on the trailer, considering weight distribution to maintain stability and safety during transit. 
  • Mid-Journey Safety Checks: Understanding the importance of conducting safety checks during a journey, including inspecting trailer connections, tire pressure, and load security. 
  • Driving Techniques: Mastering driving techniques tailored for towing trailers to optimise safety, including navigating real traffic conditions with a trailer attached. 
  • Reversing a Trailer: Practicing the skills needed to reverse a trailer safely, including using mirrors effectively and understanding the dynamics of trailer movement in reverse.

Certificate

A Certificate is issued on completion of the course.
